Why deck finishes fail early
Most peeling, blotchy decks are a preparation problem:
- New coating over old, failing coating peels off with it.
- Gray, weathered wood fibers on the surface need cleaning off, or the new finish sits on dead wood.
- Wood has to be dry before it is coated - after rain, that can mean waiting.
- Deck boards and stair treads take far more sun and water than railings, and wear faster.
Stain or paint?
Stain soaks into the wood and lets the grain show; paint forms a film on top and gives a solid, uniform color. A penetrating stain is usually easier to maintain on boards that get walked on, because a painted floor wears through in traffic lanes. Paint suits railings and trim, and can make an old deck with mismatched boards look uniform again. Brandon can tell you which suits your deck.
When to do it
Late spring through early fall, on dry days with mild nights. Doing the deck before winter means the wood goes into the snow protected, instead of soaking up a season of meltwater.
