Most of the job is preparation
A finish only looks as good as the wall underneath it. On a typical interior repaint, the prep covers:
- Moving and covering furniture, and masking floors, counters and fixtures.
- Filling nail holes and dings, and repairing cracks so they do not show through the new color.
- Repairing damaged drywall or plaster so the patch disappears (see drywall repair and plaster repair).
- Caulking gaps at trim, and sanding glossy trim so the new coat grips.
- Priming stains and patches so the finish dries to one even sheen.
Ceilings
Ceilings are where water stains, cracks and old patches show worst, and where most homeowners least want to work. Customers single out the ceiling work in particular - one wrote that Brandon "repaired an painted all my dad's ceilings an did a excellent job."
Choosing a sheen for how the room is used
Sheen decides how a wall wears. Flat and matte finishes hide imperfections and suit ceilings and bedrooms but mark more easily. Eggshell and satin wipe clean, which is what hallways, kitchens and kids' rooms need. Semi-gloss belongs on trim, doors and bathrooms. It is worth talking through room by room before any paint is bought.
Homes built before 1978
Plenty of houses in Rockford, Loves Park and the older parts of the Stateline area were built before 1978, when lead-based paint was banned for residential use. Anyone paid to disturb painted surfaces in those homes is covered by the EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule, which sets how the work is contained and cleaned up. If your home is that age, mention it when you call.
