Exterior Painting in Machesney Park & Rockford, IL
Siding, trim, doors, garage doors and porches - washed, repaired and repainted to stand up to Northern Illinois winters and humid summers.
What exterior painting looks like with us
Northern Illinois is hard on exterior paint. Winters bring months of freezing and thawing, which opens every crack and gap that lets water in; summers are hot and humid, which feeds mildew on the shady side. A repaint lasts when the surface underneath is sound, so exterior work starts with washing, scraping and repairs - rotten wood replaced, gaps caulked - and only then the paint. A customer wrote that Brandon and his team "painted my house exterior, garage door and cleaned and stained my deck. I highly recommend them."
What’s included
What happens on an exterior job, in order
Every exterior follows the same sequence, because skipping a step shows up a winter or two later:
- Wash. Dirt, chalky old paint and mildew all stop new paint bonding.
- Scrape and sand. Anything loose comes off, and edges are feathered so they do not show.
- Repair. Rotten trim and soft boards are replaced now, not painted over (see carpentry repairs).
- Caulk and prime. Open joints are sealed and bare wood is primed.
- Paint. Cut in by hand at trim and windows.
Freeze and thaw
Rockford-area winters swing above and below freezing again and again. Water that gets behind paint through a split seam or an open joint freezes, expands, and pushes the paint off from behind - which is why exterior paint here so often fails at the bottoms of trim boards, window sills and corners first. Good caulking and sound wood matter as much as the paint.
Painting season
Exterior painting generally runs from late spring into fall. Paint needs the air and the surface to stay warm enough while it cures, and cold nights in April and late October cut the day short. Summer storms and humidity set their own schedule. Interior work carries on all year, which makes winter the time for inside jobs.
Choosing exterior colors
Three tips from Brandon's own old website: keep the architecture in mind, since not every style suits every color; work with what is already there - roof, driveway, brick and landscaping; and stick to a cohesive scheme of three or more shades for body, trim and accents.
